I have read and loved four of Antoine Laurain's previous books: The President's Hat, The Red Notebook, French Rhapsody, and the Portrait. They are charming fairy tales for adults. Vintage 1954 follows in the same mode. The four main characters find themselves transported from 2017 Paris to 1954 Paris after drinking wine of 1954 vintage. The singer Edith Piaf, the poet Jacques Prevert, and the film director Francois Truffaut are among those they meet. But more than meeting celebrities is in store for the time travelers. This book made me want to forget my troubles, grab a baguette, and settle down in the warm summer grass with a bottle of Beaujolais. It had everything: laughs, tears, friendship, and even a hint of sci-fi mystery. I thoroughly enjoyed every page. Now purchasing all of Antoine's other books. C'est fantastique!!!

American Bob, from Milwaukee is initially particularly enthralled by the lack of modernity.Meet Harry, the Harry of Harry’s Bar (he died in 1958), Truffaut, Piaf… and imagine seeing the Mona Lisa without the milling hoards and guards!They can enjoy their tardis adventure with the benefit of future knowledge. They enjoy a visit to the original Les Halles, where handcarts with provisions were the order of the day. Les Halles would be razed to the ground just 14 years later.How, eventually, do they find their way back to their own era?Antoine Laurain is a gifted storyteller and we first encountered his work in The President’s Hat which is equally delightful. Vintage 1954 is short, written with humour and a pleasure to read.
